The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL), also known as Guangshen'gang XRL, is an express railway to be open in phases between 2011 and 2016. It will connect Kowloon, Hong Kong in the south and Panyu, Guangzhou, Guangdong in the north.
Contents |
It is divided into two sections, the Guangshen section with four to six stations, and the Hong Kong Section, with one station. Service on the Guangshen section officially opened on December 26, 2011. Construction of the Hong Kong Section began on January 2010, with service scheduled to open in 2015.
Under the current plan the total distance will be 142 kilometres, and the expected travel time from West Kowloon Terminus in Kowloon to Guangzhou South Railway Station in Shibi, Guangzhou will be 48 minutes. It will be connected with the Wuguang High-Speed Railway at Guangzhou South Station, and the Xiashen Railway at Shenzhen North Railway Station.
The Guangshen section connects Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen in Guangdong. The total distance is 116 kilometres and the expected travel time between Guangzhou's Guangzhou South Railway Station and Shenzhen's Futian Station is 36 minutes. Trains on this line will run at a maximum speed of 350 km/h.
Construction cost will be covered by the Guangdong Province People's Government and the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China. The Guangshen section officially opened on December 26, 2011 with the exception of Futian Station, which is expected to be open in 2012.
Apart from Guangzhou South and Futian, it will have four stations in between, namely, from north to south, Dongchong, Humen, Guangming and Longhua (Shenzhen North, New Shenzhen). At Guangzhou South Station it will be connected in the north to the Wuhan-Guangzhou Passenger Railway, in the west to the Guizhou-Guangzhou Railway, and in the south to the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway. At Shenzhen North Station it will be connected to the Southeast Coastal Express Railway. When the Hong Kong Section is open, expected to be 2015, some of the trains will run onwards from Futian onto West Kowloon Terminus, across the border in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
A 10.8-km-long Shiziyang Tunnel has been built to allow the railway cross the Shiziyang Channel (Chinese: 狮子洋) of the Pearl River between the Dongchong and Humen Stations.[1] The completion of the tunnel was reported in March 2011.[2]
Under the current plan the total distance of the Hong Kong section is 26 kilometres, most of which through underground tunnels.[3][3] The dedicated track will enable a top speed of 200 km/h;[3] the expected travel time from Kowloon, scheduled to open in 2015, to Shenzhen's Futian Station is 12 minutes.
The Hong Kong section has met opposition since 2009 when demonstrators opposed the project.[4] It later escalated into larger protests in 2010 with fierce oppositions from different groups.
Despite the protests, on January 15, 2010, the Legislative Council of Hong Kong approved HK$66.9 billion (US$8.6 billion) in funding, with 31 votes for to 21 against.[5]
